Description

The University of Nashville was an educational institution that existed as a distinct entity from 1826 until 1909. Born out of Davidson Academy and Cumberland College, the University of Nashville played a large role in making Nashville the "Athens of the South." During its history, it operated at various times a medical school, a four-year military college, a literary arts (liberal arts) college, and a boys preparatory school. Several educational institutions presently in operation trace their roots to the University of Nashville. These include Montgomery Bell Academy (all-male preparatory school), Vanderbilt University Medical School, Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University, and the University School of Nashville (co-ed preparatory school).
