Description
Meharry Medical College, established in 1876 through the efforts of Dr. George W. Hubbard, Dr. William J. Sneed, and Samuel Meharry, is the only AMA accredited, privately endowed, predominantly African American medical school in the world.
Meharry opened as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College in 1876. The first class had one graduate. The second class, which had its commencement in 1878, had three graduates. In 1886, the Dental Department was founded, followed by a Pharmacy Department that was founded in 1889. Meharry formally separated to form an independent school in 1915 and moved to its present location in 1930. During its first ninety years of service, it trained more black and minority physicians and dentists than any other institution.
